Hiking the Moselsteig from Bullay

Your hike starts right outside the apartment

The Moselsteig is one of Germany’s finest long-distance trails: around 365 kilometres in 24 stages from Perl on the Upper Moselle to Koblenz. One section runs along the heights around Bullay – you can reach it on foot from our Haus am Königsberg. In the evening, bus or train bring you back comfortably.

Stage 15: from Zell (Mosel) via Bullay to Neef

Stage 15 is the stage “on our doorstep”. It starts at the Schwarze Katz fountain in Zell, climbs the steep Collis path to the Collis tower and leads through vineyards onto the heights above Bullay. On the way you look out over the Marienburg, the Prinzenkopf and Arras Castle. A branch path leads down to Bullay; from the Bullayer Königshütte viewpoint you see the Moselle valley, the Alf valley with Arras Castle and Bullay’s double-deck bridge, where railway and road cross the Moselle one above the other. The trail continues over the Petersberg to Neef.

  • Length: around 20 km, walking time about 6 hours
  • Difficulty: hard, around 650 m of ascent and descent; sure-footedness and sturdy shoes are needed on the steep Collis path
  • Tip: you can split the stage in Bullay – take the bus to Zell in the morning and hike back to us over the heights, then continue from Bullay to Neef the next day.

Stage 14: from Reil to Zell (Mosel)

The shorter stage upstream runs through vineyards and woodland from Reil to Zell, with views of the Moselle loop around the Marienburg.

  • Length: around 12 km, walking time about 3.5 hours
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate

Stage 16: from Neef to Ediger-Eller – over the Calmont

The shortest stage of the Moselsteig is quite something: it crosses the Bremmer Calmont, Europe’s steepest vineyard, with a viewing platform at the end. Experienced hikers with a head for heights can take the Calmont via ferrata between Bremm and Eller instead.

  • Length: around 11 km, walking time about 4 hours
  • From Bullay: a few minutes by train to Neef or Eller

There and back without a car

Bullay has a station on the Moselle railway line. Regional trains connect Bullay with Neef and Ediger-Eller, and the bus runs to Zell. During your stay you receive the VRM guest ticket from us free of charge for buses and trains in the Rhine-Moselle transport association – so you can start a stage wherever you like and travel back in the evening without buying a ticket. If you arrive by train, we will pick you up from Bullay station free of charge (getting here).
